I worked for nine years with Jeff at Applied Biosystems (ABI) in Foster City, CA. While corporate council was located elsewhere, Jeff's group addressed the Intellectual Property issues of a large, multi-national organization. This included, among other things, patent filing, trademarks, document review, litigation, and licensing. Jeff built and lead a strong team of hardworking and talented employees. He would bring in outside council, as appropriate. Perhaps his biggest impact was in redirecting the legal group to be more proactive. The patent group worked closely with scientists and engineers to survey the patent landscape and identify and address potential threats early. This shared review was very effective and both the attorneys and scientists learned what was important. Further, he was able to prioritize which patents to extend and which to let lapse resulting in significant savings while maintaining a strong patent portfolio.
